ITIL improves NHS trust services

St George's Healthcare NHS trust uses standards review to improve IT department

Written by James Brown

St George's NHS trust is using an IT services plan based on an ITIL assessment to manage its system better.

ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library), a set of best practice standards for managing services in IT, has meant changes to St George's working practices for managing IT problems, modifying existing infrastructure and controlling assets.

Before the review, the NHS trust was uncertain as to the maturity of its IT and helpdesk processes, says David Boakes, head of computing at St George’s.

'As a provider of IT services we wanted to measure our offerings against industry best practice and ensure we were providing a value for money service, as benchmarked against other comparable organisations,' he said.

'Specialists from Plan-Net were able to guide us, provide key performance indicators on service and offer advice which will enable us to improve these processes considerably.'
