York to offer text message parking service

Council to extend mobile phone payments

Written by Dave Friedlos

Visitors to the city of York could soon pay for parking by text message following the successful implementation of mobile phone payments.

The council already offers a voice recognition service that enables drivers to pay for parking by calling a number and giving details of their location, car registration and length of stay.

But parking services manager Russ Broadbent says extending the system and allowing text as well as voice payments will further simplify parking.

‘Visitors will no longer have to carry cash and there will be less money in the machines at any time, which is better for security,’ said Broadbent.

‘In time, we will not have to employ as many people to collect cash from machines.’

The system has been implemented by O2 and Verrus and includes provision of GPRS-enabled BlackBerry devices to parking attendants.
