NHS authority gets new data warehouse

NHS South Central has launched a new data warehouse to store information on 2.2 million patients.

The authority, which covers Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, wants the system to help doctors deal with practice-based commissioning that will allow them to manage budgets for their patient's treatment.

The Thames Valley Data Warehouse (TVDW), it is being fitted with a reporting tool to help give GPs secure access to patient level data to support their budgeting decisions.

It will also warn them if they are in danger of going overbudget.

Malathi Reddy, NHS senior projects manager for Bucks and Milton Keynes says the short deadlines for PBC increased the need for a consistent presentation of key commissioning data across the SHA.

'We wanted a simple yet powerful web-based tool to give rapid, clear access to information in a variety of formats, for both technical and non-technical users. By working in partnership with the trusts in the authority and with Ardentia we have achieved this,' she said.

'The TVDW works hand-in-hand with emerging NHS Connecting for Health (CfH) systems, and fulfils the key CfH objective of enabling fast access to patient data for clinicians and analysts.'
