Traffic control firm tracks fleet online

Amber Langis uses telematics to improve response times

Written by Dave Friedlos

Traffic control company Amber Langis is to use real-time tracking information to improve response times and meet service level agreements set by its clients.

It will install location-based technology into its fleet of road service vehicles to increase productivity through improved operational control.

The Internet-based system allows managers from Amber Langis’ 10 depots to see and use the same fleet information.

Fleet vehicles are fitted with a small electronic in-vehicle-unit (IVU) which is tracked by GPS in real-time and then transmits data to an online control centre. Managers can access the system anywhere and at any time via a standard web browser.

It will be able to identify the nearest engineer to a call-out, which avoids inefficient routing of drivers and provides better customer service. Historical reporting capability can also be used to verify attendance at locations, essential in meeting service level agreements for out-of-hours and weekend work.

‘Our business operates from 19 different depots and co-ordinating between them all effectively is a mounting pressure if we are to become more productive,’ said Amber Langis director Geoff Maxsted.

‘We need to optimise our response times so we can meet our SLAs with companies such as Scotia Gas Networks, which we can now do by identifying the nearest van available to go to the site.’

He says Amber Langis chose Cybit to provide its Fleetstart-Online tracking system because it offered a differentiator when tendering for new business.

‘We can demonstrate to prospective customers exactly how we can meet their demands and the ways in which we can guarantee a rapid response and effective service,’ he said.

Fleetstar-Online is scalable to meet future business needs.
