JD Sports updates broadband service

High street retailer to streamline business and cut costs

Written by Dave Friedlos

High street retailer JD Sports has introduced managed broadband services across its 382 shops to reduce costs, consolidate applications and facilitate new services.

By adopting the virtual network operator (VNO) model, JD Sports will centralise multiple applications like CCTV security, credit card authorisations and automated real-time logistics from point-of-sale systems to the distribution warehouse.

The retailer says it will make significant savings in the next three years and improve performance.

Operations director Peter Atkinson said: ‘The Retail Application Network (RAN) will allow us to streamline business processes and cut costs, while investing in innovative technologies that will elevate us above the competition.’

One innovation is to stream carefully marketed music and video feeds into each shop.

The VNO model means employees can access the internet and corporate sites from numerous access points, rather than having to set up multiple contracts with different network operators.

Utilising managed services for core networking infrastructure enables JD Sports to get greater value from existing assets and focus on critical business processes.

The RAN is provided by vendor Sirocom.
