Unipart tracks vehicles online

Company signs £2.5m deal to track fleet in real time

Written by Dave Friedlos

Automotive and accessories firm the Unipart Group in investing £2.5m in web-based vehicle tracking to improve customer service and management information.

The satellite tracking system will monitor the location of 1,500 vehicles in real time using GPS technology and continuously transmit to the head office.

The position of each vehicle is displayed online using street mapping and managers can access the information from any web-enabled PC.

‘This will significantly boost the productivity of our operations and bring significant benefits to us and our customers,’ said director of transport systems Keith Robson.

‘By identifying every vehicle's movements, we can provide complete transparency on delivery to help us provide better service to our customers.

‘It will also enable us to improve fuel consumption by cutting out mileage, giving us measurable savings while reducing our impact on the environment.’

Masternaut will provide the telematics technology, with activity logs for each vehicle sent by email. This enables measurement against key performance indicators and the application of Six Sigma, a data driven management policy.

Unipart Automotive is the UK’s largest independent supplier of components to high street firms like Nationwide Autocentre and Kwik Fit.

The company’s fleet of delivery vehicles operate from a nationwide network of more than 300 branches offering a 30-minute delivery.

This commitment is enforced in Masternaut’s contract as the progress of parts between branch and customer can be tracked in real time via the Internet.
