Met Police protects itself against spam

The Metropolitan Police Service is upgrading its secure external gateway to cope with increasing volumes of spam.

The upgrade will include procurement of a security solution to improve its email content filtering, anti-virus and anti-spam facilities for all Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) email addresses.

The force needs to meet the demands of increasing email traffic and to provide a more resilient and secure interface with external networks. 

A spokesperson for the MPS said: ‘Like any large organisation, we are subject to rising levels of spam,’ a spokesperson at MPS said.

‘The long-term benefits include more than a 98 per cent reduction in spam.

'The system will consolidate existing email content filtering services providing the end user with a seamless and an invisible means of blocking spam.’

The force will be able to increase email capacity and enhanced functionality through a reduction in spam and ensure computer systems are not infected by malicious codes.

The project will involve deployment of a dedicated appliance or software on a standard hardware platform.

The MPS expects to award the contract for the project by October 2006.
