University finds software boosts its intelligence

De Montfort takes on business intelligence to improve view of courses

Written by James Brown

De Montfort University is using business intelligence (BI) tools to monitor its courses and maintain standards.

The Midlands-based university is one of the largest in the UK with 3,300 staff and more than 23,000 students. It was previously able to use its systems only to monitor operational data.

John Shelton, business systems group manager at De Montfort, says his department can now perform historical analysis of trends in educational statistics.

‘We can analyse things such as how many of our students are getting firsts, where they are getting them, and in which programmes,’ he said.

‘We can also look at it from a modular perspective, so if a student was taking a particular module as part of a programme, we would be able to see what the pass rate was like.’

De Montfort is rolling out a dashboard system to work with Information Builders’ web-based software, says Shelton.

‘It will allow us to present information in a totally different ways. Users will see different views depending on what they do at the university,’ he said.
