Council cleaners get fleet tracking

North Midlands local authority takes on new vehicle monitoring system

Written by James Brown

Mansfield District Council is using a fleet tracking system to power a new street cleaning initiative.

The GPRS-based system will allow the North Midlands local authority to keep a track of its fleet of street cleaning vehicles, monitoring them in real-time.

Fleet tracking will help improve the efficiency of the street cleaning teams, says David Hewes, Mansfield's parks and street care operations manager.

'I know where my vehicles are at any point in time, which means we can quickly respond to requests. It also has implications for the health and safety of lone workers,' he said.

The council's street cleaning team is responsible for clearing the town's streets of litter and dealing with problems like fly tipping, graffiti, and abandoned cars.

As well as providing information on the position of individual vehicles, the system will also be able to show managers whether they are involved in cleaning.

'The vehicle activity record enables me to improve the efficiency and increase our productivity by monitoring vehicle performance and improved route scheduling,' Hewes said.
