City of London to get blanket WiFi

Hotspots to be fitted in lamposts and street signs

Written by James Brown

The City of London Corporation is planning blanket WiFi coverage for the whole of the Square Mile, the capital's financial district.

Run in partnership with WiFi vendor The Cloud, the project will go live in the next few months.

The WiFi hotspots will be fitted to existing street furniture including lamposts and street signs, allowing anyone with wireless access to use the internet from anywhere in the City.

Michael Snyder, the chairman of the City of London's Policy Committee, says the network is being fitted to help maintain its position as the world's leading financial centre.

'City workers and visitors will be able to use wireless broadband to work efficiently; stay in touch with their office via handheld devices while on the move,' he said.

'The City is a fast moving environment and we are responding to the increasing time pressures faced by workers by providing the technology for them to stay up to date, wherever they are in the Square Mile.'
