Give your old PCs a new life

Computing readers can help support international charity appeal

Written by Mark Samuels

Computing is calling on IT directors to donate PCs to its Computer Aid appeal.

Working with specialist charity Computer Aid International, we are asking the UK’s technology leaders to donate old PCs so they can have a second life in the developing world.

Technology leaders have donated some 13,000 computers to the appeal since March.

The appeal web site makes it easy to donate old PCs, and we are hoping to beat last year’s total of more than 28,000 computers.

Computer Aid chief executive Tony Roberts says success will be hopeless without the continued support of Computing readers.

‘Please continue to support the appeal,’ he said. ‘We will need more support in the next year.’

Computer Aid International provides a free reconditioning service to help companies dispose of unwanted kit effectively.

Donated computers are tested, refurbished, fully upgraded and shipped to developing countries.

Since its launch in 1998, Computer Aid International has shipped more than 50,000 PCs to 93 countries.

While two million working PCs are dumped in the UK every year, many children in Africa often leave school without having touched a computer.
