Trust installs wireless at eight London hospitals

7,000-user network supports UCLH project to replace paper processes

Written by James Brown

University College London Hospitals (UCLH) Trust has installed a 7,000-user wireless network as part of a project to replace paper processes with electronic patient records (EPR).

The network, supplied by Aruba, will support UCLH’s EPR system across eight hospitals, including the newly built University College Hospital site.

Kevin Jarrold, UCLH’s director of information management, says the new system will create a high-tech environment that allows better treatment of patients.

‘Our first use of the wireless network will be in support of our new “computers on wheels” service: PCs on trolleys that can be wheeled to a patient’s bedside, so that information such as X-rays can be shared directly with them,’ he said.

‘Information is a key driver for doctors. At the moment getting hold of patients’ case notes and X-rays, and being able to home in on the piece of information they need is a frustrating process. The wireless system will allow access to all the information doctors need as they engage with the patient.’

The EPR system will allow doctors to order tests, access results, and to track a patient as they move through the hospital, as well as tracking waiting lists and handling outpatient administration.

‘All of those things that previously would have had to be done on paper will be done through this system, improving patient care by creating a more efficient environment,’ said Jarrold.

Patient confidentiality will be better protected thanks to the new wireless network and the EPR, he adds.

‘We have very rigorous policies on patient confidentiality, and a number of safeguards are being built into the system to make sure that only authorised users are allowed to access it,’ he said.

‘As we move forward with the implementation of the clinical applications, we will also be introducing a swipe card and PIN system for access to patient records,’ added Jarrold.
