Boots equips staff with PDAs in IT overhaul

High street retailer improves customer service

Written by Daniel Thomas

Retailer Boots has extended its deployment of wireless handheld devices to staff to improve customer service.

Assistants at 130 of its high-street stores have now been provided with wireless PDAs so they can respond faster to customer enquiries.

A further 75 stores will receive the devices this summer, following a pilot last year in 21 shops (Computing, 8 July 2004).

The project, part of an IT overhaul being carried out for Boots by IBM, will allow shop staff to access point-of-sale, pharma-cy and back-office applications through a secure web portal.
