Marks and Spencers has begun trialing multi-currency tills from ICL. Over the next two years the tills will be rolled out to all the retailer's stores across Europe. By 1999, Marks and Spencers' customers will be able to make transactions in one currency, and receive change in another. M&S said the decision was not dependent on whether the UK joined the single European currency.
