How did you get into IT?
I got into IT in the days of school computer clubs and did an information systems engineering degree. My first role was a one-year placement at British Coal headquarters’ technical department during the downsizing after the miners’ strike, which was an interesting time with some great characters.

Which IT vendor do you think has been the most influential in the past 20 years?
I would say Oracle, because its core databases brought a level of industrial strength to the market. Also because of its acquisitive streak; and of course the licence negotiations.

Which mobile device do you currently use?
A BlackBerry Curve.

How often do you check it?
It depends on how interesting the meeting is, but probably every 20 minutes.

What technology would you save in a fire?
The Sky HD box for me and the Playstation 3 for my eldest son.

Which technology would you most like to have invented?
Satnav software and GPS – ­ it has been truly useful. Although I wish people would save the electricity when they are on a motorway and just have a straight line on their screen.

Is now a good time for people to enter the UK IT profession?
Yes. Current market turbulence means businesses have to make a call in terms of cost, service and innovation initiatives so there is plenty of real-life experience to be had. People should be discerning as to what roles they pick, and go for businesses with leaders who want to win. I would suggest roles that enhance the value of technology or, if they are into the engineering side, they should find niches around media, web and mobile commerce.
