How to make your IT team headhunter-proof

Headhunters agree that most executives who leave a job do so for reasons other than money; paying higher salaries will not retain key staff. So how do you reduce the chances of your best staff being poached?

n One of the most common reasons for leaving a job is the opportunity to contribute to a cutting-edge or high profile project. Consider rotating high-flying IT staff every two years so they get to work on interesting projects and remain challenged.

n Another common reason to start scanning the job adverts is being stuck in a position where you cannot take on responsibility or management. Delegate – it frees up your time and helps less senior staff to develop skills and feel valued.

n Consider staff workshops or employee surveys to identify potential ‘soft’ job issues, such as the business culture, dress code or working arrangements.

n Try short-term job swaps within the company that allow staff to experience life outside the IT department. This helps prevent boredom and allows staff to develop essential business skills.

n If all else fails, hire a headhunter – most agencies will not poach from firms with whom they already have a relationship.
