On: Datacentres must be zero carbon by 2019

Effective data management is a critical component
While virtualisation continues to attract much attention in the green IT debate, the article is right to highlight that better and smarter data management also has an important role to play. Virtualisation is a great first step for organisations that need to rationalise their IT infrastructure and reduce power consumption. However, organisations should also consider how they manage their data more effectively as this drives their hardware and storage requirements.
For example, well defined database archiving strategies can dramatically reduce the horsepower needed to run production systems in the first place. While using the right archive store with cutting-edge new compression techniques can allow 20x-30x more data to be stored on existing hardware and storage platforms while keeping data accessible.
Virtualisation and effective data management are not mutually exclusive but you could argue that organisations should tackle the root cause of their IT infrastructure problems, explosive data growth, before determining what hardware and storage solutions are required to become carbon neutral.

On: Imagine a new global leader

Drivel
What a load of drivel.

The demographers have been repeatedly and massively wrong about future population trends. If we cannot predict human numbers a few decades hence, what hope have we got of predicting the Earth's climate. Anyone who seriously believes we can predict the Earth's climate - and what impact, if any, humanity has on it - desperately needs to be kept away from sharp objects and matches.

And the only way we're going to get an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050 is by a forced de-urbanisation policy of the kind the Khmer Rouge carried-out in 1970s Cambodia.

Finally, I would like to repeat a question I've heard elsewhere: does the British government propose to fix the world's climate before or after it's fixed the schools and hospitals?

On: US bank loses details of 4.5 million customers

comment to #1
They aren't too quick - legally they have to tell the people that are affected. If they did not tell them quickly and the people did not take the proper steps to protect their identities, the bank would be in a much bigger mess later on if it's found that they knew the data was missing and didn't report it immediately.

What a coincidence
Isn't the retail head of BRC the same as the one who replaced all the systems at Scope a couple of years ago, spending loads of money and almost sending them bankrupt?
