First 1Gb Flash memory ships

Boost for gaming and in-car systems

Iain Thomson, vnunet.com 14 Oct 2005

Memory firm Spansion has begun sampling what it claims is the world's first 1Gb single-chip NOR Flash memory.

Based on Spansion's 90-nanometre MirrorBit technology, the chip is the highest density, single-chip NOR Flash memory device on the market.

The device has been designed for a wide range of embedded applications including automotive navigation systems, communications infrastructure equipment, gaming and industrial control.

"This meets the density, quality, cost structure and scalability needs of the diverse embedded market," said Ian Williams, corporate vice president of marketing at Spansion's Embedded Memory Division.

Full production is slated to begin before the end of 2005, priced at $18.50 in quantities of 10,000.

Spansion is the joint Flash memory venture of AMD and Fujitsu.
