You would have thought that the gender wage gap, particularly in the early stages of an accountant’s career, would have disappeared by now, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Research by Longbridge Search & Selection found that female auditors are paid, on average, 5% less than their male counterparts, with women earning just £65,189 compared to men’s £68,492.

It also discovered that only one-in-four auditors moving to in-house roles in the City were women, blaming the perceived ‘City boy’ culture of banking for the lack of movement.

For those women who do make the move to internal audit, the good news is that they earn more than the men - on average a whole £120 a year more. That’s got to make it worthwhile, surely?
