Welsh Assembly leases space for £200m datacentre

A multi-million pound datacentre will create skilled jobs in Wales

Written by Janie Davies

The Welsh Assembly Government is leasing 70,000sq ft of space to a datacentre developer to create what will be one of Europe's most advanced datacentres.

Next Generation Data (NGD) has invested £200m in the project, which will provide companies with secure, green storage for large volumes of data and access to blade servers.

NGD has a dedicated power supply with a direct connection to a Primary Substation with a 400,000v output, giving clients the ability to site power-hungry applications such as blade servers in high volumes.

The datacentre will be as green as possible, with free air cooling as standard and motion sensors, to minimise its carbon footprint.

It's a great opportunity for development in Wales, said first minister Rhodri Morgan.

"Datacentres are the motorways of the 21st century. They are an absolutely critical tool for economic growth, and that's why I am so pleased that we have secured this development," he said.

"This major investment will create up to 100 high-skilled jobs, and is a big vote of confidence in Wales.”
