Google increases its Translate options

Google has added ten new languages to its Translate service

Written by David Neal

Google has added ten new languages to its Translate service, bringing the total up to 23.

Added languages include Bulgarian, Finnish, Hindi, Norwegian and Swedish. " Language is one of the biggest challenges we have in making information universally accessible," said Jeff Chin, product manager, announcing the additions.

Google Translate automatically translates text and web pages. In a quick test we changed the IT Week web site from English into Spanish. The page was translated very quickly, and did format correctly. However we were unable to verify the quality of the entire translation.

For users that are unsure of what language they are viewing Google has added a "Detect Language" option, which can be used to identify it.

Developers can download an AJAX language API that will let them embed Google Translate into their web pages.
