MPs are to launch an inquiry into the government's growing use of surveillance measures such as CCTV cameras, DNA databases and the proposed ID cards scheme.
Jack Straw, Leader of the House, told MPs that the Home Affairs Committee will announce the inquiry on 27 March.
The inquiry was triggered in part by last October's report from the Information Commissioner's Office, which warned that the UK risked "sleep walking into a surveillance society".
Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said in response to Straw's announcement: "Labour should realise that the state exists to serve the citizen and not the other way round."
A separate Home Office review of CCTV is expected next month. The report will recommend that all CCTV recordings can be used as evidence in court.
