Zycko launches WEEE compliancy package

Distributor claims its VARs will benefit

Written by Laura Hailstone

Storage and networking distributor Zycko has launched a Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) compliancy package, which it has claimed will allow its resellers to stand out in a crowded market.

The launch of Zycko Pro Asset Management coincides with the transposition of the WEEE directive into UK law earlier this month (CRN Online, 2 January).

David Galton-Fenzi, group sales director at Zycko, said: “There are already businesses offering disposal of IT hardware in line with the WEEE directive. However, we are one of the first distributors to provide resellers with the opportunity to expand their WEEE services by also offering to ensure the total eradication of data.”

By supplying a data-destruction service, in addition to WEEE hardware disposal, Zycko claimed VARs can provide businesses with complete peace of mind that any data unwittingly left on a redundant hard drive is removed. One such method for doing this is a ‘degaussing’ technique that uses powerful magnets to eliminate all magnetic properties from a hard drive.

Galton-Fenzi added that resellers will also feel more comfortable buying a WEEE service from their distributor – which already understands the channel – rather than an unknown recycling company.

In 2005, storage distributor Hammer joined forces with recycling specialist Life Cycle Services to launch the Advanced Disposal Kit, its own WEEE service for the channel (CRN, 26 September 2005).

Mark Kinsell, sales manager for server products at Hammer, said: “Zycko’s offering sounds identical to our Advanced Disposal Kit. We have had a lot of interest in the kit since it launched and we will definitely see an increase in take-up now the WEEE regulations have become law.”
