Renfrewshire to streamline benefits

Scottish council agrees deal to make revenue department more efficient

Written by James Brown

Renfrewshire Council revenues and benefits department plans to install software to speed up the processing of tax claims.

The system will automatically allow the council to make calculations on people's eligibility for housing, council tax benefits and free school meals.

It will also allow claims assessments to be carried out by non-specialist staff by guiding them through questions to ask a claimant and reach a decision based on the law.

Renfrewshire has a commitment to deliver high quality services that provide excellent public value, says revenues and benefits manager Elaine McCue.

'Working in partnership with Northgate Information Solutions, eBenefits will help us to meet our nine customer service pledges for benefits services,' she said.

'It will also provide our citizens with a fast and easily accessible route to the benefits they need – ultimately helping the most disadvantaged members of our communities.'
