Intel has unveiled the silicon for its Wireless UWB Link 1480 MAC as well as reference designs for ultra wide band (UWB) host solutions.
The Intel silicon can be integrated with third-party devices to offer fully functioning UWB radios that device manufacturers can use in their appliances.
UWB is a wireless technology that enables high bandwidth and high data speed connections over a short range.
It is commonly referred to as wireless USB for its ability to connect printers, computers, digital cameras, portable media players and potentially monitors.
"UWB will allow end-users faster wireless access to their digital content than ever before," said Rich Wykoff, general manager of Intel's New Business Initiatives group.
The technology offers a data transfer rate of 480Mbps over a distance of three metres, with connection speeds dropping to 110Mbps over 10 metres. Wi-Fi technology maxes out at 54Mbps and Bluetooth at 3Mbps.
Intel expects that UWB will first become available through ExpressCards for laptop computers and USB dongles.
