Rorie Devine became chief technology officer of Betfair this year, having previously been information systems director. But he has not taken a strict technology or business route to become the most senior technology professional at Betfair.
Devine’s previous roles have included chief technology officer of NTL’s television and internet content subsidiary.
He says the opportunities he has been given to work with internet technologies, and the challenges that come with running an online business that needs to be available 24 hours a days, seven days a week, have given him both technology and business awareness.
Devine has also gathered business acumen by working within the financial services area.
His early years were spent at LogicaCMG, working with clients such as the Bank of England. He says that such exposure gave him international experience and a good understanding of international finance.
He then went on to consult across Europe within the field of investment bank trading floor technology.
‘My work experience includes time in both large and small companies, so hopefully one of the things I have learned is the need for the IT team to add business value,’ says Devine.
‘At the end of the day, all IT activity is undertaken to increase revenue or decrease costs, and none of us should ever lose sight of that,’ says Devine.
