The number of UK internet users with an always-on connection is approaching 50 per cent for the first time, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).
Dial-up users accounted for 50.8 per cent of UK surfers in April 2005, but this represents a drop from 71.5 per cent in April 2004.
Always-on connections, such as broadband, cable and leased line, grew from 28.5 per cent to 49.2 per cent over the same period.
The survey also highlighted a decline in the market for unmetered dial-up access, down from 31 per cent a year ago to 19 per cent in April 2005. The drop suggests that these customers are the most likely to move to broadband.
The ONS explained that the figures are an estimate, and that it will complete a full survey in August of this year.
